Inaugural GPS Ride

Yesterday I took a first "trial" bike ride with my brand new Garmin Edge 305 GPS. It was a short ride, about 10 miles, but the goal was to see how it worked, and discover what could be done with it. It comes with some PC software that uploads the data from the device, maps the ride, and plots various stats that the device gathered or that the software calculated. The stats include heart rate, heart rate as % of maximum, elevation, grade, speed, and pace. It was interesting to compare heart rate to grade (direct relationship expected), and speed to grade (inverse relationship expected).

There's also a free site - gpsvisualizer.com - that will upload an export of the ride stats (Garmin ".tcx" file) and plot it against Google maps and various other satellite and topo map sources. One of the impressive things was that the GPS data was accurate enough to show which side of the street I was riding on, when zoomed all the way in.

Can't wait to take a longer ride.
